Menu Monday; August Reads

WOW.....end of august already, where does the time go. So far so good on school. Yeah, S1 is adjusting to homework, those 4 block classes allowed time for homework or talk whichever one you picked. He did homework. he's not used to cutting his free time out:0 S2 has adjusted to high school. He really seems to like it:) He's in ROTC (truly I believe he has a bet with his friend to see who gets kicked out first) but he seems to enjoy it. (THANK YOU GOD!!!! YOU ARE AN AWESOME GOD!!).

Just discovered a series by Suzanne Brockmann. wonderful reading. It's a spy semi-romance series about Navy Seals. I'm trekking back to the library today to find more.

One more week until the FSU Miami game. I plan on having a little tailgate party labor day for it. We'll definately have some non-alcohol hurricanes to liven up the party. Maybe some cuban food since it's Miami and there's such a large influence down there of Cuban & Carribean culture (so i've heard from transplants that are all relocating up here) I've met 25 or more this year. Insane, which they claim it is down there.

Here's what's cooking at the Nole House this week:

Sun: grilled bayou chicken legs or hamburger steaks, fries, fruit

Mon: East Carolina pulled pork sandwiches, chips, slaw

Tue: clud sandwiches, chips, pudding

Wed: 4 cheese ravioli, salad, garlic bread

Thu: sun dried tomato chicken, angel hair pasta w/herbs, broccolli

Fri: jambalya, rice & garlic bread

Sat: steaks, smashed potatoes, corn

School days

Can't believe s1 begins college life on Wed and s2 begins high school life next Monday the 24th. the high school held orientation on Sat!!! wth? No teachers were there so still no idea what they need in terms of school supplies. Waiting til after the last minute is my forte so this should work with my schedule. I've learned not to bother buying anything until you meet them; because if you buy folders they want comp books or binders, if you buy binders they want comp books or folders. If you buy pens, they want black if you purchased blue, blue if you purchased black. He received his schedule, which is tenative and most likely to change on day 1. His school days will be odd number classes on odd dates, even classes on even dates so if its the 26 he'll do classes 2, 4, 6, 8 & on the 27th he'll do 1, 3, 5, 7. hopefully this one is easier for me to remember since I didn't do so well the last 3 years with the rotating blocks. Week 1: periods 1-6, week 2: periods 2-6 1st period rotated to last and so on. In 3 years I never quite got the hang of period 5 is 6 this week but will be 1 next week. He's signed up for ROTC here's hoping he doesn't get kicked out, he hates being told what to do, has long hair (which has to be cut). this will most likely be the best thing ever if he's successful. He does tend to let his attitude get in the way sometimes, esp when he can't do something well. Here's hoping everyone deals with the frustrations in a fruitful manner has a successful year!!!

Hubs is home from the hospital after surgery #4, this time he had an anterior fusion. He had to stay 3 days because his blood pressure was wacky and they wound up doing more than they thought orginally. Turned out his disks were in much worse shape and his bone spur was larger than what they thought.

That's all the excitement at our house; so here's the plan for dinner this week:

Sun: Pork Roast w/veggies, cream 40 peas, cabbage
Mon: BBQ Pork Sandwiches, fruit
Tue: Chicken Lettuce wraps, fruit
Wed: Beef Tips over noodles, green beans
Thu: Strata, hashbrowns, fruit
Fri: Fried Grouper, cole slaw & french fries
Sat: BBQ Rib, turnips
s1 is getting a little excited, but he's staying at home and going local, but i've told him to feel free to do laundry and cook. Just like he was at a dorm:) We are having a ball with the all the jokes, oh...that's not included with your meal plan...they are beginning to wear thin on him though.

Have a great week!!

WEEELLLLL.....

another day, another layoff. OMG management promised we were finished last week, don't know if this person was on vacation or not and didn't learn of their elimination until yesterday. Scary times.....But i know we cannot afford to operate like we have been or in another month or 2 none of us will have a job!!! Still very scary.

Speaking of scary....hubs found a rattlesnake in the attic of his shop last night...at 9:00 pm he and s1 are out searching in the dark with flashlights for it so they could shoot it. Of course, chicken little stayed out of sight and in the house but peered out the window in case he fell off the ladder or was in case the snake struck him. I don't have no idea why the dogs didn't discover him before last night. I guess they've decided they better tighten up around here. So far each night they've discovered some varmit and treed it....i know the neighbors love us...
Saturday: rat in my crepe myrtle tree of course this was at 11:00 pm which I managed to sleep through. hey i need my beauty sleep.
Sunday: possum - he was not a happy critter either he hissed (guess that's what you call it that's what it sounded like to me)
Monday: snake - on the roof of the shop no less
Keep up the good work dawgs....treats are coming your way.

Here's our treats for the week:
Sunday: Pot Roast with Veggies
Monday: Beef tips, rice, carrots & green beans
Tuesday:Bacon, lettuce & tomato sandwiches (they were so good)
Wednesday: Chicken piccatta, broccoli
Thursday: ham panninis

Menu Monday

WOW... can't believe it is a new week already. At a family reunion this weekend I learned of the best chocolate ice cream receipe ever...it mimics a wendy's frosty. don't eat too much it's loaded with calories but oh my gosh is it ever good. That's why it's only good to make when there are a lot of people around to help you eat it.

Here's how:

16 ounces of cool whip
14 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
1 gallon of chocolate milk

Pour condensed milk & cool whip into ice cream freezer pour chocolate milk to the fill line, stir the ingredients together, then turn on the machine and layer with ice & rock salt until frozen. YUM...

Real Housewives of New Jersey

OMG....love this show. It passed OC as my fave. I thought I wanted the lip injections until I watched this show. Um...no thanks i'll pass. And what planet does Danielle live on? Seriously, how can you whine you need someone to pay for you and then have your plastic surgeon put on a spa party? Go figure, what trash she is, I cannot believe what she just said, hmmm...... maybe that is why the guy won't come around you perhaps he's looking for someone with morals.

Caroline is my fave on this one, Jill on NY and probably Jeanna on OC. I can't stomach Atlanta at all.
What I'm reading this week:
Wonderful, just like her other novels. I haven't found a book of hers yet that I don't like. Great Patio read.

The Red Box

I have discovered the most wonderful thing....The Red Box. Movies rent for $1 per night. Input your email address and you'll receive a confirmation of rental and return. You can even reserve movies online. A most perfect thing I do declare. We've had one in our wallyworld forever but I just looked at it on my weekly trip. I've noticed the lines growing longer and longer as I passed by each time. This weekend I decided to jump in and do it. Amazingly easy.... Maybe they'll add games soon. Man, wish I had thought of this idea.

Graduation recap

Wow!!!! I now have a high school graduate!!!! I can still see him walking down the street on his first day of kindergarten. (not by himself....i had no idea the roads would be that packed so instead of being late on the 1st day his dad and he walked to school while I sat in traffic). Seems like yesterday.

It was an absolutely beautiful night for the ceremony. Normally it's hot and humid here in the panhandle. It was a little windy, slightly cloudy, no rain, no humidity. It was perfect. They all looked so cute marching down the field to their seats. You weren't supposed to clap or cheer until all the names had been read, but that is so hard. It's so exciting to see them cross that stage and get their diploma cover. School is work now. When my son was studying for the ACT he looked at one of my old study guides and said "You had to know this to get into college....I had to know this stuff to get out of middle school."

The sr. class prez gave a speech that began with "I can't believe we've done graduated". Her english teacher should be so proud. I'm going with she was nervous. I couldn't believe all the references to body functions and arrests that were made. Guess i'm getting old.
I saw my child for maybe 5 minutes. He ran up the steps to get a picture with his grandparents, then off to find the rest of his friends. Oh well, that's what high school is all about. Now, he has to put his gown back on after I iron it again(what a pain to iron, it's next to paper so the iron can't be too hot) and do it again so I can get pictures with us.

Memorial Day Reading

Great weekend in store. Today is high school graduation day for S1. Senior breakfast was this morning and the ceremony is tonight. Crossing fingers we have no rain because it's outside and will only be changed to inside in case of hurricane force winds.

Short week at work due to Memorial day weekend. We are having a rememberance for my great uncle that was KIA in WWII and honoring all the other heros lost fighting for our freedom.

Our weather is crazy...windy as can be and the temp feels like March. Not complaining at all though.....just amazed and very thankful that it will be a cool night to watch the celebration and to find out where those mortarboards wind up.

There is a tropical system in the Gulf...hurricane season seems to start in May the last couple of years.

In case anyone is looking for a great read for the weekend: I just finished The House on Tradd Street. I would recommend it. This is my first read of this author but won't be my last. So, now i'm off to the library to find something else to read for the weekend.

Happy Memorial Day everyone.

Kudos to the c/o 2009. May your future be bright and full of blessings. Enjoy everyone one of them. God has great plans in store for all of you.

Zipper Peas, Cream peas

YUMMMMMM....found zipper peas (aka cream 40 peas someone (unknown person) at the market said) today at the farmers market so they are on the menu tonight

Pork Loin Roast
Zipper Peas
Sauteed Cabbage
Sliced Tomatoes
Cornbread

To celebrate Kentucky Derby instead of Mint Juleps we are having Paula Deen's Chocolate Mint Brownies. I'm rooting for Dunkirk (no other reason than a nice Scottish name).

My mouth is watering...

Last night was an interesting time spent at Friday Fest. There was a band there called Twice Daily. Wow, we were only planning to spend 1/2 hour but we kept going back to the band so we wound up staying until 10:00, but it was worth it. Some super cute mustangs...a pink one and a convertible aqua one I fell in love with.

Please feel free to leave suggestions or cautions. I've never used it in anything.

Hello out there.....

I've been lurking on blogs for about a year now and I've decided to take the plunge. I am certain I'll never be as clever, witty or interesting as the ones I read but we all have a place don't we? During my lurking time, i've discovered I lean more towards the home decorating..Southern Hospitality to name one i'm go to over and over and over again. I love the Menu Monday series at orgjunkie.com; completely hooked on it. I've even picked up a couple of recipes for my meat and potato guys.

I think i'll be brave enough to post to Menu Monday....here's hoping
